New Poll Finds Americans’ Risk Perception of Vaping is All Wrong
Will ‘Public Health’ Groups Lift a Finger to Change This? Of Course Not.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new poll from the Boston Globe and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health finds that most Americans are uninformed or hold outright wrong beliefs about the risks of vapor products and electronic cigarettes. This has the American Vaping Association, a leading advocate for the benefits of reduced harm nicotine and non-nicotine products, calling on the purported ‘public health’ groups responsible for creating these warped risk perceptions to begin undoing the damage.

Of the 1,014 respondents, just 44% accurately reported that they believed vapor products to be less harmful than tobacco smoking. Meanwhile, 32% and 6% inaccurately believe they are just as harmful or more harmful, respectively, and 14% could not answer the question. The poll also found that 64% believe that taxing vapor products the same as tobacco cigarettes is good public policy, while 32% oppose such measures. Additionally, 48% of respondents oppose banning flavors in vapor products, while 46% indicated support.

“Let’s be clear — there is no doubt in the scientific community that vaping is far less hazardous than inhaling burning tobacco smoke. The fact that more than half of the American population can’t answer this question accurately is a scandal,” says Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association.

“The immense level of spending of public dollars we see going towards creating unethical propaganda campaigns naturally results in a confused populace,” continued Conley. “This poll is not measuring public opinion, but the effectiveness of a well-funded corporate strategy to destroy a category that is eroding a cash cow for Big Pharma. Executives at GSK and Pfizer are surely smiling at the results of this poll, as it shows that their multi-million dollar donations to purported ‘public health’ groups are not going to waste.”

Not surprisingly, the anti-tobacco movement does not seem concerned about the inaccurate risk perceptions that they’ve helped create. When contacted for comment by the Boston Globe, a spokesman for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids did not lament that erroneous perceptions of risk are bad for public health. Instead, he pivoted and pretended that this poll shows that Americans support the FDA’s proposal to ‘regulate’ vapor products.

“The FDA’s proposal would decimate the industry and lead to over 99.9% of vapor products being banned. That is prohibition, not reasonable regulation. If these groups cared about health, they’d be exposing the truth about the FDA’s regulation.”

On the non-controversial side, overwhelming numbers of Americans believe in common sense regulations, with 90% believing only adults should be able to purchase e-cigarettes and 94% believing that products containing nicotine should be labeled as such.

“A recent CDC poll found that over 20% of Americans who have quit smoking in the last year are using vapor products. The number of recent quitters could be much larger if it wasn’t for dishonest and unethical campaign tactics that seek to paint these smoke-free and tobacco-free products as being just as dangerous as cigarettes,” said Conley. “The public health establishment should be called to task for their role in misinforming Americans about these reduced harm technology products.”

About the American Vaping Association:
The American Vaping Association is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that encourage the growth and sustainability of small- and medium-sized businesses in the rapidly growing vaping and electronic cigarette industry. The AVA was founded by Gregory Conley, a consumer and industry advocate with a long track record of advocating for vapor products dating back to 2010.

We are dedicated to educating the public and government officials about public health benefits offered by vapor products, which are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine or nicotine-free solution and create an inhalable vapor. The AVA is not a trade group and does not speak for any particular businesses, including our industry sponsors.

CRAFT VAPERY would like to thank its partners at NJOY for the following content.

Electronic Cigarettes: A Long Time Coming.

A billion dollar industry built in less than a decade? Not quite. While the e-cig exploded into the global market in the mid-2000s, its metamorphosis can be traced back almost a century.

The electronic cigarette’s journey began in the 1920s with Joseph Robinson and his creation of the world’s first electronic vaporizer, which exhibited similar characteristics to today’s e-cigs. In 1976, Herbert A. Gilbert filed a patent to create the first smokeless cigarette. Despite his ingenious design, the product was ahead of its time and wouldn’t find its niche for another 40 years.

In the 1990s, several patents were filed for cigarette substitutes and novel electronic cigarette designs, and in the 2000s came the advent of commercially available e-cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes were introduced in China in 2004, moved into the European market by 2006, and finally hit American shelves in 2007.

E-cigarettes continued to serve as a viable alternative to tobacco counterparts for many former smokers, despite ongoing controversy and legal proceedings. In 2010 California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected a ban on the sale of e-cigs in the state, and the United Kingdom Action on Smoking and Health supported electronic cigarettes as a harm reduction product. The United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that same year that the FDA could not ban e-cigs as unapproved drug delivery devices, a landmark decision which has served as legal framework in following years for the e-cig and vape industries.

Studies have bolstered the use of e-cigs as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. Public Health England recently stated that e-cigs “have the potential to make a significant contribution to the endgame for tobacco.” Another study claimed that e-cigs are 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

With appearances on both the big and silver screens, celebrity endorsements, promising research, and a growing user population, things are looking positive for the e-cig and vaping industries.

brief-history-of-e-cigarette-final

Thank you to our partners at NJOY for their work in putting this together.

Former US Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona authored many federal warnings regarding tobacco use. He serves on the board of NJOY, an independent electronic-cigarette company that has the mission of rendering the tobacco cigarette obsolete.

CRAFT VAPERY would like to say thank you to both Dr. Richard Carmona and the New York Post for this article.

From the New York Post:

To say electronic cigarettes ignite controversy is an understatement.

For some, e-cigarettes offer the prospect of disrupting the $800 billion global cigarette trade by providing a satisfying alternative to smoking. Nicotine itself is not a carcinogen, and e-cigarettes do not have all of the toxins and carcinogens produced by burning tobacco that cause half of all long-term smokers to die prematurely.

For the other side, e-cigarettes look more like Big Tobacco bouncing back with a dangerous new way to hook kids and keep people smoking.

Who’s right?

E-cigarettes have been on the market since 2007, but only now are we starting to see their impact. For anyone willing to take a dispassionate look at the emerging data, the news is good for those inspired by the prospect of e-cigarettes crowding out tradition smokes. Consider five important observations:

First, in the mid-2000s, the share of Americans who considered themselves current smokers declined to about 20 percent. Then that decline in smoking stalled, picking up again with the advent of e-cigarettes.

Second, during the rise of e-cigarettes, smoking rates in the US adult population have fallen to their lowest rates in recent history. According to new data released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the proportion of American adults who smoke has fallen each of the past six years, from 20.6 percent in 2009 to 15.2 percent in early 2015. In the past year, the smoking rate fell by 10 percent — the largest single-year decline in the last 18 years.

Third, fears of young people becoming addicted to e-cigarettes or e-cigarettes serving as a “gateway” to smoking remain speculative. To the contrary, youth smoking rates have continued to drop at unprecedented rates, and are already below the government target for youth smoking for 2020, more than five years ahead of what had been a very ambitious schedule.

Fourth, there are now at least 2 million ex-smokers using e-cigarettes in the United States. While we can’t be certain that they are ex-smokers because they are using e-cigarettes, there are thousands of powerful testimonies of “vapers” who quit smoking using e-cigarettes after having tried everything else.

And fifth, though we can’t yet be certain of all of the long-term health impacts or benefits of e-cigarettes, that doesn’t mean we know nothing.

Thousands of experimental measurements have been made that show that the important hazardous chemicals in combustion cigarette smoke are mostly not present in e-cigarette vapor, or are present at levels that give less cause for concern. Based on what we know today, there is broad agreement that e-cigarette use is significantly safer than cigarette smoking.

The American experience is mirrored across the Atlantic. In August, Public Health England, an agency of Britain’s Department of Health, issued a 111-page report on electronic cigarettes that carefully addressed every significant concern that has ever been raised about these products.

PHE found that e-cigarettes are almost exclusively used by those who have already smoked and rejected the claim that they are attracting nonsmokers. They also showed that both adult and youth smoking continued to decline while e-cigarette use has grown.

And based on the available information, PHE concluded electronic-cigarette use is likely to be around 95 percent less harmful to health than smoking.

PHE is the first public body to declare its support for e-cigarettes. PHE declares its ambition to achieve a tobacco-free generation by 2025, and it believes that “e-cigarettes have the potential to make a significant contribution to the endgame for tobacco.” I share their ambition and believe that many of my colleagues in public health do as well — as do many in the private sector.

We now need to agree on how to make this work. The time has come for such responsible companies within this industry (with one of whom I am now affiliated), and the government and public health (where I have spent a good part of my career) to work together to find ways to accelerate the historic obsolescence of traditional smoking with rapidly advancing cleaner new technologies.

Millions of lives depend on it.
